Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPEX)

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing involves measurement of exhaled oxygen and carbon dioxide during exercise.  Most patients will exercise on a treadmill, although bicycle testing is available at our center for patients with difficulty walking.  The test allows measurement of the peak oxygen consumption (VO2 max), which is used to assess prognosis and severity of chronic heart failure. As a general rule, patients with a VO2 max less than 12-14 cc/kg/min have a poorer survival and should be considered for evaluation for heart transplantation or left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation.
