Headaches and Chronic Pain

A migraine is a chronic type of headache that affects over 28 million people in the US, and causes severe pain that lasts from four hours to three days, and occasionally even longer. There are several different types of migraines, that may or may not begin with an aura, which changes the way patients see and may cause muscle weakness or a burning sensation on one side of the body for 15 to 30 minutes before the actual migraine occurs. The treatment of migraine includes life-style modification, risk factor mediation and oral medications for migraine abortion and prevention. If failed medical treatment, BOTOX® injection may be used for chronic migraine.

BOTOX® Therapeutic for Migraines

Although most commonly known as a wrinkle-fighting agent, BOTOX® Therapeutic can also help reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. Migraines are often caused by a reaction to certain triggers, which activates a nerve and causes pain. By injecting BOTOX® into the skin, your muscles become temporarily paralyzed and the nerve is blocked, resulting in fewer migraines with little to no side effects. Patients receive BOTOX® injections once every three to six months, and some people may experience temporary neck pain and weakness from the injection. BOTOX® is FDA approved for migraine treatment; it is proven a safe and effective treatment in many studies. BOTOX® is for adults with Chronic Migraine with 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting 4 hours or more. Your insurance company would approve Botox injection for chronic migraine if you have failed 3 different classes of preventive medications, such as antiepileptic medications, beta blockers, or antidepressants.
