Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed Tomography (CT Scan)

The Advanced Imaging Center is proud to house the 256-channel Philips Brilliance Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. A technological marvel, it is the region's most advanced CT, providing ultra-high resolution, non-invasive scanning of the heart and coronary arteries, perfusion imaging, and vascular imaging at up to one half the radiation dose of less sophisticated scanners at remarkable speeds.

The significantly reduced radiation dose is a major advance in CT technology and is particularly beneficial in the treatment of children.

What is Computed Tomography

CT is essentially a sophisticated X-ray that is used to produce highly accurate images of the body, including the brain, head, neck, spine, chest, lung, abdomen, and pelvis.

The resulting images are incredibly detailed and greatly assist in the diagnostic process by helping physicians visualize structures in the
body and how they relate to one another.

Key Benefits

Our state-of-the-art multi-slice and ultra-fast helical scanner provides the most comprehensive scans possible, including diagnostic body, musculoskeletal, cardiac and neurologic scanning.

Important Information about Lung Screening

Although it is not usually covered by insurance, our CT unit is also capable of lung screening. If your insurance will not cover this exam, our Center requires payment with cash or credit card (checks are not accepted). For more information about the exam or our payment policy, please call our main number at (914) 493-2500.

CT scans are painless and simple.  In most cases, there is little specific preparation you need to undergo prior to a CT scan, although there are some things to be aware of:

  • Contrast dye: Although not always required, you will most likely be administered a contrast dye prior to your CT scan will.  If you have or suspect you could have allergies to the dye, be sure you notify your physician so that medications may be administered to minimize any reaction.
  • Barium sulfate: In the case of abdominal or pelvic scans, you will need to drink barium sulfate, a thick, chalk-like mineral substance used to enhance images. Considered harmless, barium sulfate can help distinguish between different organs and tissues and assist your physician in identifying symptoms and conditions.

CT Questionnaires

The CT scan process is painless. Here is what to expect on exam day:

  • CT scans of your head require that you remove all jewelry, hair pins, etc.
  • You will need to don a patient gown if you are undergoing a CT scan of your chest, abdomen, or pelvis.
  • If your exam requires a contrast agent, which improves organ visibility in certain tests, you will be asked to sign a consent form.
  • You will be positioned on the table for the scan and an I.V. will be started, if required.
  • Once the table is moved into the scanner, your exam will begin. The technologist will instruct you on how and when to hold your breath.
  • During the exam, the table will move very gently and slowly.
  • You will be assisted off the table once the exam is complete and you will be able to change and leave.
  • The results of your exam will be forwarded to your referring physician who will be responsible for explaining them to you.

Plan to arrive 30 minutes early to complete the registration process.
