Liver Transplant Surgeon Dr. Youmin Wu Joins Westchester Medical Center

Nationally recognized surgeon has made valuable contributions in the field of liver transplantation and cancer research

Westchester Medical Center (WMC) recently welcomed Youmin Wu, M.D. to its Medical Staff.  Dr. Wu will serve as the Chief of Intra-abdominal Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery.

Dr. Wu graduated from Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China in 1982, and went on to complete his Residency at The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University.  He has performed over 800 liver and kidney transplants over the course of his career and was a member of the four man surgical team that performed the world’s first multi-visceral organ transplant.

Dr. Wu has made many valuable contributions to the field of transplantation and cancer research and may be best known for pioneering cavaplasty, one of the most widely used surgical techniques in liver transplantation.  Developed during his tenure at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the cavaplasty technique shortens operative time and minimizes the opportunity for postsurgical complications.

With this technique Dr. Wu is credited with performing the youngest living related pediatric liver transplant (19 days old) as well as transplanting the oldest recipient with the longest survival and the oldest donor with the longest survival.

Dr. Wu has also pioneered new concepts involving early diagnosis and combined radiation therapy in specific types of liver transplantation—treatment regimens which have become the standard of care, prompting UNOS to change its liver transplant policies.

Dr. Wu has developed and led kidney and pancreas programs in deceased and living donor adult and pediatric liver transplant at the University of Iowa and the University of Arkansas where in 2004 he launched the State’s first and only liver transplant program which was ranked number one in the nation for best outcomes by Healthgrades

Born and raised in Mainland China, he has devoted significant resources and time to promoting transplantation in his native country.  Dr. Wu travels to China regularly to teach, lecture and serve as a special advisor to the country’s Minister of Health.
